The light at the end of the tunnel.

30 June 2009

On my way to work this morning, I noticed the dome light in my car was on. Normally, this indicates that one of my doors isn’t shut all the way, activating the light. Strangely, the door indicator light in my dash was not lit; leaving me completely confused and a little frustrated.

After opening and shutting each door twice, I finally decided that my trunk must be unlatched, triggering the dome light. I drove the rest of the way to work convinced that my trunk was going to fly open at any moment and I’d be forced to pull over on the side of the freeway, the thought of which terrifies me.

I finally pulled into my work parking lot, got out of the car, and found that my trunk was in fact closed. What the hell?! Why is this stupid light on??

And then it dawned on me: I must have hit it accidentally when I was getting in my car.

THE LIGHT SWITCH WAS TURNED ON.

Enthralled with the awesome.

Last night, I found Wednesday happily snuggled up in HP’s lap. This isn’t an uncommon scene in our home, as he and Wednesday share an incredible bond; he is so obviously her favorite of the two of us. I sat on the couch next to HP and noticed that Wednesday was staring intently at his face as if she were completely enthralled with his every move.

Finally, after a few minutes of watching this, I asked him what she could possibly be staring at. Without hesitation and very matter-of-factly, he replied:

“My AWESOMENESS.”

Jon & Kate Plus 8 - Who are we to judge?!

23 June 2009

For the first time in my life, I watched an episode of Jon & Kate Plus 8 live as it aired on TV in my area. At 9:00 sharp Monday night, I was glued to the couch in anticipation - will they or won’t they?! Are they REALLY filing for divorce?! For some reason, every ounce of me HAD to know. It was as if at that very moment, life depended on it. All I wanted to do was sit in front of the TV for the next hour and watch it unfold in front of the entire world.

In my defense, I’ve never been one for reality TV. I’m not a fan of American Idol, I refuse to watch Big Brother, and Survivor doesn’t even interest me, yet I am completely enthralled with TLC shows. I am now hopelessly invested in JK+8 almost as if I know them in real life, I’ve been known to squeal in excitement when a new episode of Little People, Big World comes on, I’ve seen just about every episode of every cycle of America’s Next Top Model, and I’ve recently gotten myself sucked into the world of The Little Couple. I seem to thrive off of these diary-like shows filmed more like documentaries than Hollywood entertainment. Instead of challenges, rewards, and voting people off the island, these people are attempting to live their everyday lives while a camera crew follows them around and captures the good, the bad, and the downright brutal. While literally MILLIONS of us tune in to watch it unfold.

In a way, blogs are the same idea - displaying personal lives for all the world to see. I suppose someone could argue that anyone with a blog is essentially doing the same thing: capitalizing on one’s own life if others happen to find it fascinating enough to watch or read. I can’t help but raise the question: Are we getting a little close to a real life The Truman Show?

If you feel so inclined, I’d like to ask:

1) If you were offered to star in a reality show about your life, would you consider it?
2) Do you think blogging is any different than starring in a reality show? Why or why not?

Bath Time and a GOOD picture of Wednesday!

23 June 2009

Wednesday has been fascinated with bath water since she was just a baby. During the first month after we adopted her (in the Before Gir days), she often sat on side of the bathtub watching in fascination at THE WATER! and THE BUBBLES! and THE WATER! the clear, completely invisible WATER! Oh how she loved watching the water.

While we were still a one kitteh household, Wednesday showed such an interest in water that I quickly realized she didn’t mind being IN it - it appears that the warm water overpowers her kitty instinct to RUN FOR YOUR LIFE AND SCRATCH EVERYTHING YOU ENCOUNTER ON YOUR WAY TO A COLD DARK HIDING PLACE AND THEN SHAKE FOR HOURS UNTIL YOU ARE FINALLY DRY. But then, that’s exactly what she does as soon as she’s no longer in the water.

If you look closely, you might be able to see her entire body shivering in the photo below.

Honestly, it just doesn’t seem very effective compared to Gir’s strategy: spinning around in circles chasing the tip of his wet tail nonstop for 30-45 minutes. Voila - air dried kitteh!

Note: I truly believe this is the best picture of Wednesday I’ve ever managed to take. She doesn’t even look possessed by a demon in this one! Hooray!

Violet, you’re turning VIOLET!

23 June 2009

I am absolutely bursting with excitement, but today has been less than fabulous in general. I woke up horribly grumpy and even snuggle time with the kittehs didn’t seem to help my rotten mood. I’m still having a rough day, but I CANNOT CONTAIN MY EXCITEMENT about my new toy!

With the help of Grammy and Pop’s ever so gracious birthday money this year, I was FINALLY able to afford a much-needed laptop for myself. I deem such a thing much-needed because HP’s stepdad bought him a new laptop last Christmas, but he pretty much hasn’t seen it since. Well, except when I’m hunched over it for HOURSANDHOURSANDHOURS at a time. You can imagine his frustration, though he really is a great sport about the whole thing. He rarely even mentions it anymore.

On Saturday, HP and I spent the entire afternoon price checking laptops from Portland to Wilsonville and I’m very happy with the 16″ Gateway I chose. Unfortunately, it’s SO new that they are currently in production and won’t be in stock until Thursday or Friday. Needless to say, I walked out of Best Buy with a painfully lighter wallet and a piece of paper to prove my purchase. It was pretty anti-climactic, as you can imagine.

So here I sit, deseperately awaiting the email pop-up window to announce that I’ve received a new email from Best Buy informing me that my purchase is ready for pick-up. So far, nothing. But then, it isn’t Thursday or Friday yet. But I have no patience at all. Zero. Zilch. None.

I’m feeling very Veruca Salt right now.

“But I want it NOW, Daddy! Tell them I want it NOW!”

Thoughts on a shared birthday.

19 June 2009

As I reported earlier, today is my birthday. It also happens to be the birthday of my absolute favorite girl on this entire planet - my younger sister. As we have two separate birth mothers, our father must have had a serious Twilight Zone moment when she just so happened to be born EXACTLY 6 years (to the DAY!) after I was. I imagine it may have gone something like,

“HOLY SHIT. What are the chances?!”

Throughout my childhood, sharing a birthday with my sister was a bittersweet celebration. It was difficult not to feel jealous of our little brother who had HIS OWN DAY ALL TO HIMSELF, JUST HIM FOR THAT ONE DAY, NO ONE ELSE BUT HIM. You can imagine how jealous sister and I were of his ENTIRE DAY TO HIMSELF. (Did I mention he doesn’t have to share his birthday?!)

Thankfully, as the years went by, sister and I accepted and even embraced our shared birthday. This was OUR day - we were the only ones we knew whom SHARED thier special day. Together, just the two of us. OUR day. It was an amazing revelation. Now that I’m 2,500 miles away from my family, our shared birthday is once again bittersweet.

Congratulations on your 18th birthday, sister. Welcome to the real world; may it treat you with kindness and generosity. I am so proud to share this day with you, even if just in spirit! I love you always and forever.

“Go shawtie, it’s yah birthday!”

Today is my birthday! It’s going to be a very good day. :)

For the Love of Juno

18 June 2009

I’ve found myself knitting daily again, and it really does make me happy. After starting a pair of socks that I found bored me to tears, I decided to change direction. A very good friend of mine talked me into joining her on a yarn shop run one day for lunch. By “talked me into”, I mean she simply mentioned that she may or may not have been thinking about possibly going to Twisted on lunch. I can’t lie, I jumped on the chance like I ALWAYS do. I’m a Master Enabler when it comes to yarn crawls and coffee breaks. Something tells me that she knew this and utilized it to talk HERSELF into justifying the trip. Needless to say, she happily bought what she needed and I went back to work that afternoon with 2 skeins of Malabrigo Lace in Velvet Grape and a plan.

Behold, my Juno Regina whom I’m just going to call Juno (I loved that movie!). It started off a little rough, as this is only my second lace project and the first time I’ve worked with lace weight yarn. The Malabrigo is FABULOUS as always, but tends to be quite slippery on my Options needles. This was my progress as of this afternoon (with Gir in the background being “sneaky”).

I pooped bright green today. I mean GREEN. Green as healthy, luscious, manicured grass. GREEN. The whole thing.

Did I mention it was GREEN?!

…wtf?!
