For the first time in my life, I watched an episode of Jon & Kate Plus 8 live as it aired on TV in my area. At 9:00 sharp Monday night, I was glued to the couch in anticipation - will they or won’t they?! Are they REALLY filing for divorce?! For some reason, every ounce of me HAD to know. It was as if at that very moment, life depended on it. All I wanted to do was sit in front of the TV for the next hour and watch it unfold in front of the entire world.
In my defense, I’ve never been one for reality TV. I’m not a fan of American Idol, I refuse to watch Big Brother, and Survivor doesn’t even interest me, yet I am completely enthralled with TLC shows. I am now hopelessly invested in JK+8 almost as if I know them in real life, I’ve been known to squeal in excitement when a new episode of Little People, Big World comes on, I’ve seen just about every episode of every cycle of America’s Next Top Model, and I’ve recently gotten myself sucked into the world of The Little Couple. I seem to thrive off of these diary-like shows filmed more like documentaries than Hollywood entertainment. Instead of challenges, rewards, and voting people off the island, these people are attempting to live their everyday lives while a camera crew follows them around and captures the good, the bad, and the downright brutal. While literally MILLIONS of us tune in to watch it unfold.
In a way, blogs are the same idea - displaying personal lives for all the world to see. I suppose someone could argue that anyone with a blog is essentially doing the same thing: capitalizing on one’s own life if others happen to find it fascinating enough to watch or read. I can’t help but raise the question: Are we getting a little close to a real life The Truman Show?
If you feel so inclined, I’d like to ask:
1) If you were offered to star in a reality show about your life, would you consider it?
2) Do you think blogging is any different than starring in a reality show? Why or why not?
